Atelier de Créations mixtes - Mixed Media Workshop

Bon jeudi

Happy Thursday,
Last September, I started a Mixed Media workshop at the local Cultural Center. I had no precise expectations, however, I thought we would be working in a journal... I could not have been more surprised when I saw all the projects that the class had been working on. I almost flew away, terrified as I was! On the other hand, it gave me the opportunity to try something very different get out of my comfort zone when I decided to create a figurine out of electrical wire and clay. It also gave me a chance to personalize my inner critique, a long time homework suggested in Julia Cameron's Artist Way workshop; at that time, I had chosen a picture of Queen Regina, from the popular series Once upon a time (picture above). After spending many hours creating this figurine, pushing away the inner critique's voice whenever reaching new steps, I think I have served myself the perfect antidote: I got to know her better! Now has come the time to let her go...

Front view of the lady. She measures a bit more than 12 inches, and is standing on a beautiful piece of rock, that was given to me by a dear friend. I started the body from an electrical wire, then covered with modelling material, that was sculpted to give the shape. Then, once the material is dried, it is sanded and painted. Next step consists of dressing the lady. I used an old T-shirt and a cloth hardener medium called Paverpol, in bronze color. the bodice of the dress was cut in a heavy lace, also covered with paverpol, but this time in clear.

La figurine vue de dos.
A back view.

A close up of the bottom of the dress and the lovely stone to appreciate the glittery effect of all the medium I used to add a vintagy look.

I glued strings of hair on her skull, braided them into a chignon. She wears a hair piece made of the same lace as the bodice of her dress. The collar is beaded.

A close up of her low, very low-necked! and her sleeves, made of cheese cloth. She holds in her hands a golden apple, that bleeds droplets of gold. A symbol of my creative energy that she holds prisoner.

Thank you for your visit and kind words. I always love reading you.

Oh my goodness Danielle this is phenomenal! I'm so happy to see your sculpture finished. She is so beautiful and I love the story too! You have found an inner talent that almost chased you away. You hung in there and now look at this beauty! What else may you find??? I guess that's a good question for all of us artists. You were challenged but prevailed! I'm so happy for you. I loved this sculpture even before you had the hair on it. I hope you will try this again! xoxo

Well I sure am glad you did not run away -- no matter how many times I tell you that you are an artist you never seem to believe me!! I have known you for a long time now - you have always amazed me. This sculptor is fantastic. What kind of clay did you use? No one can hold your creative energy captive except you - and you let it go drop by drop. Her dress is fabulous!!! You are one of these artists that shoot for a star but you always land on the moon looking out at the stars!
